Card-Making 101: Fixing a Flawed Design

Have you ever had a great idea for a card or project that just didn't work out as planned? Sometimes the best ideas sound good in theory but don't work out so well in practice.

I'm going to share one of my not so successful designs and then show how it was re-designed to improve it.

Here's the not so good:

The Problem:
Too many balloons
Pattern on balloons is too busy
White embossed background is too bold
Sentiment stamped with light gray ink on patterned paper gets lost

Remade card:

The Solution:
Reduce the number of balloons
Stamp balloons on patterned paper
Stamp background on a smaller Kraft panel with white ink instead of embossing
Stamp sentiment in black ink on white panel, add small image to embellish sentiment strip

I think the remade card has better scale, is much cleaner and doesn't look so overdone. The balloons on the first card aren't a bad idea, they would just look better on a more simple background.

So there you have it, just because a design doesn't work the first time don't scrap the idea altogether. Reworking the original idea can give you the result you were looking for!

Clear Scraps Inspiration with Katie

Katie has been playing with the new Clear Scraps products and she has made a couple of amazing cards!
Clear Scraps are acrylic products for card making and scrapbooking. The Clear Scraps blog is filled with creative ideas for using these versatile crafting products.

Katie created this first card using the Garden Acrylic Border

Katie added color to the border using alcohol  inks. The background is stamped using Hero Arts tweed pattern. The gems/pearls are also Hero arts. The sentiment is from Lawn Fawn Lunar lights and the patterned paper is Limeade from the Pink Lemonade collection from Lawn Fawn.

For the next card Katie used Clear Scraps 12 x 12 acrylic sheets for her card base!

She used an embossing folder to add the great texture to the card, then she layered on more great patterned papers from Pink Lemonade by Lawn Fawn. The butterfly is a ready-made embellie and the sentiment is from the Sophie's Sentiments set by Lawn Fawn.

You'll see a great selection of the new Clear Scraps acrylic products at Stamp Fever!
